Walnut Cream Pie

Walnut Cream Pie is an old-fashioned dessert with a rich, creamy filling and plenty of toasted walnut flavor tucked inside a flaky pie crust. It’s sweet and nutty without feeling quite as heavy as a dense nut pie, especially when served with a little whipped cream.
This is the kind of pie I’d bring out for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Sunday dinner, or any fall gathering where you want something besides the usual pumpkin and pecan pies.
Walnuts give the filling a slightly deeper, earthier flavor than pecans. Toasting them briefly before they go into the pie makes an even bigger difference and takes only a few extra minutes.
Like most cream-style pies, this one needs patience after baking. Give it enough time to cool and set before slicing, and you’ll get much cleaner pieces.
Getting That Creamy Walnut Filling Right

The walnuts should be chopped fairly small so they’re spread throughout the filling rather than creating large, difficult-to-slice pieces. Toasting them first also brings out their natural oils and gives the pie a fuller nutty flavor.
Keep an eye on the crust as the pie bakes. If the edges are browning faster than the filling is setting, loosely cover them with foil or a pie shield.
Most importantly, don’t cut the pie while it’s still warm. The filling continues to firm as it cools, and rushing that step can leave you with slices that don’t hold together.
Ingredients You’ll Need
The ingredient list is simple and mostly made up of baking staples. You’ll need:

- Unbaked pie crust
- Chopped walnuts
- Cream cheese
- Granulated sugar
- Eggs
- Heavy cream
- Vanilla extract
- Salt
How To Make Walnut Cream Pie
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Fit the pie crust into a 9-inch pie plate, trim and crimp the edges, then keep it chilled while you prepare the filling.
Step 2: Spread the chopped walnuts on a baking sheet and toast them briefly in the oven until fragrant. Watch them closely because walnuts can go from toasted to overly dark quickly. Let them cool slightly.
Step 3: Beat the softened cream cheese and sugar together until smooth and creamy. Scrape down the bowl as needed so there are no firm pieces of cream cheese hiding at the bottom.

Step 4: Add the eggs one at a time, mixing gently after each addition. Pour in the heavy cream, vanilla, and salt, then mix just until the filling is smooth. Avoid beating in unnecessary air.
Step 5: Fold most of the toasted walnuts into the cream mixture, reserving a small handful for the top if desired. Pour the filling into the chilled pie crust and smooth the surface.
Step 6: Bake until the edges of the filling are set but the very center still has a slight wobble when the pie is gently moved. If the crust begins browning too quickly, cover only the edges with foil.
Step 7: Cool the pie completely on a wire rack, then refrigerate until thoroughly chilled and firm enough to slice cleanly. Serve cold or let individual slices sit at room temperature briefly before eating.
Common Questions About Walnut Cream Pie

Should I Toast The Walnuts First?
You don’t absolutely have to, but it’s worth doing. A short toast brings out much more walnut flavor and gives the nuts a slightly crisper texture.
How Do I Know When The Pie Is Done?
The outer portion of the filling should look set while the center retains a gentle wobble. It shouldn’t look liquid or ripple when you move the pie.
Why Is My Filling Runny?

The pie may have needed additional baking or chilling time. Creamy pies often look softer while warm and become considerably firmer after several hours in the refrigerator.
Can I Make Walnut Cream Pie Ahead?
Yes. In fact, this is a good pie to make the day before serving because it needs plenty of cooling and chilling time.
Can I Use Pecans Instead Of Walnuts?
Yes. Pecans create a slightly sweeter, more buttery flavor, while walnuts have a stronger, earthier taste.

Can I Use A Store-Bought Pie Crust?
Absolutely. A refrigerated or frozen pie crust is an easy shortcut, especially when you’re already preparing several dishes for a holiday meal.
Walnut Cream Pie Variations
Maple Walnut Cream Pie
Replace part of the sugar with pure maple syrup for a warm maple flavor that pairs naturally with walnuts.

Chocolate Walnut Pie
Add a layer of semisweet chocolate chips over the crust before pouring in the cream filling.
Cinnamon Walnut Pie
Add a small amount of cinnamon to the filling for a warmer flavor, particularly around the holidays.
Bourbon-Free Vanilla Walnut Pie

Increase the vanilla slightly for a deeper aromatic flavor without adding alcohol.
Pecan And Walnut Cream Pie
Use a combination of chopped walnuts and pecans if you want a softer nut flavor and a little more variety in the filling.
Storing Walnut Cream Pie
Because Walnut Cream Pie contains cream cheese, eggs, and heavy cream, keep it refrigerated. Cover the cooled pie tightly and store it in the refrigerator for about 3–4 days.

You can also freeze individual slices. Wrap them well once the pie is completely chilled, place them in a freezer-safe container, and thaw overnight in the refrigerator. The filling may be slightly softer after freezing, but the flavor will still be good.
What To Serve With Walnut Cream Pie
Walnut Cream Pie is rich enough that I usually serve it simply, with a spoonful of lightly sweetened whipped cream and a cup of hot coffee. It’s also really good with black tea, and a small scoop of vanilla ice cream works if you’re serving the pie as a more indulgent dessert. Around Thanksgiving or Christmas, I’d cut slightly smaller slices and put it out alongside pumpkin pie, fruit pie, or a plate of cookies so everyone can try more than one dessert. A few extra toasted walnuts scattered over the whipped cream are plenty for finishing each slice.
Give this pie plenty of refrigerator time before slicing. Even if the filling looks nicely set when it leaves the oven, chilling is what gives you those clean, creamy wedges.
And take the few extra minutes to toast the walnuts. It’s a small step, but in a pie where walnuts are the main flavor, you really can taste the difference.

This Walnut Cream Pie is a rich, creamy dessert with crunchy walnuts and a smooth, sweet filling—perfect for holiday baking, Thanksgiving desserts, family gatherings, and easy homemade pies.
