My Boyfriend Said, ‘It’s My House, So You Should Be Doing All The Chores’ — I Almost Packed My Bags, But Decided To Teach Him A Lesson Instead
My name is Jenna, and I moved in with my boyfriend Adam eight months ago, into the house he already owned before we met. I still pay for groceries, half the utilities, and my own car payment, but the house itself is technically his.
Somehow, over those eight months, that technicality turned into a whole division of labor I never agreed to. I do the laundry, the dishes, the vacuuming, the grocery runs, the meal planning. Adam mostly just exists in the space I keep clean for him.

I stood there for a second, genuinely speechless. Not because I hadn’t heard something like it before, in smaller pieces, but because he’d finally said the whole thing out loud, like it was a rule I’d agreed to and simply forgotten.
I walked into the bedroom, pulled my suitcase down from the closet shelf, and set it on the bed. Then I looked at it for a long moment, and closed it back up, empty.
I had a much better idea.
