Bryan Cranston and Fellow Actors Pay Tribute to Mitte

Cranston, who portrayed Walter White, Mitte’s on-screen father, shared a personal tribute on Instagram. He recalled meeting Mitte when the young actor was 14 and watching him develop throughout the filming of “Breaking Bad.”
Cranston described Mitte as enthusiastic and determined. He also remembered the teenager occasionally ignoring advice from his television parents, Cranston and Anna Gunn, as he learned to navigate life on a successful series.

Reflecting on Mitte’s early acting experience, Cranston wrote, “That kid was pretty raw when we started shooting the pilot in February of 2007, but little by little we watched him grow into a really fine actor.”
He also praised Mitte’s work as an advocate for performers with disabilities and his leadership in philanthropy. “All that promise and potential now is such a loss. It is especially devastating to hear that he took his own life,” Cranston wrote.

Cranston revealed that he and Mitte had been in touch just weeks before his death and were hoping to meet again.
“We were texting each other just a few weeks ago – figuring out when we could meet for lunch. I don’t know if that lunch would have changed his future…” Cranston wrote.

He ended his tribute by expressing his affection for Mitte and encouraging anyone contemplating suicide to seek support through the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Other members of the “Breaking Bad” cast also shared their grief.

Dean Norris, who played Hank Schrader, Walter White Jr.’s uncle, recalled looking out for Mitte when he was a young actor on set. In a post on X, Norris described him as a kind young man and extended his thoughts to Mitte’s family.
Aaron Paul, who portrayed Jesse Pinkman, expressed heartbreak in a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter: “I am at a loss. I am heartbroken over this news. RJ, I love you my friend. You will be missed. And to whoever happens to be reading this, please know you are loved, and you are not alone. Always remember that.”

Actor and director JB Blanc also remembered spending time with Mitte while working on “Breaking Bad.” In his tribute on X, Blanc described him as a lovely person and expressed sadness over the news.
Beyond the show’s cast, Oscar winner and “CODA” star Marlee Matlin shared an emotional message on X, saying Mitte held a lasting place in her heart.

“Moneyball” star Eric West recalled spending time with Mitte during New York Fashion Week. In a post on X, West remembered his kindness and talent.
The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) also acknowledged Mitte’s career in a statement on X.

The union noted that Mitte had been a member since 2006 and was part of the “Breaking Bad” ensemble recognized with a 2014 Screen Actors Guild Award.
While colleagues reflected on his career, Mitte had also shared plans for a major change in his personal life the previous year.

RJ Mitte Was Planning a Future With His Fiancée
In 2025, Mitte announced his engagement to Kennedy Suarez, his girlfriend of five years. According to People, the actor proposed on October 10, Suarez’s 30th birthday, during a charity gala at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort in Carlsbad, California.

The event benefited United Cerebral Palsy of San Diego, an organization Mitte supported through his advocacy and fundraising work.
Mitte and Suarez had been friends for more than a decade before their relationship developed into a romance. They began dating after recognizing their feelings for each other during a trip together.

Speaking to People after the proposal, Mitte described what the relationship meant to him. “I’m thrilled to have found my person, my partner in life who makes me want to be better, no matter what we’re doing,” he said.
Mitte added that Suarez was central to his life and that he looked forward to their future together. At the time of the announcement, the couple had not begun planning their wedding. They were settling into life in Brownsville.

How RJ Mitte Turned His Personal Challenges Into Advocacy
Mitte had cerebral palsy, the same condition as his character on “Breaking Bad.” In a 2016 interview with Vice, he recalled being diagnosed at age 3 and undergoing physical, occupational, and speech therapy.

He described treatments intended to improve his ability to walk, including repeatedly stretching his feet and placing them in casts. Reflecting on the ongoing challenges of managing his condition, Mitte said, “It’s a fight. It will always be a fight.”
Mitte moved to Los Angeles as a young teenager and initially pursued acting to meet people his age. About six months after beginning acting classes and extra work, he landed his role on the TV show.

His experience on the series helped shape his views on disability representation in entertainment.
“I think it’s really important that we have real stories on television, film, that are having real impact,” he said. “People are hungry for realism. They’re hungry to see characters like them, and I think that’s what was really important with ‘Breaking Bad.’ It showed characters that everyone can relate to.”

Mitte also encouraged people to embrace their identities rather than hide their disabilities. “Don’t hide your disability. Don’t hide whatever it is that you’re hiding,” he said.
Although advocacy was not initially his goal, he gradually embraced the role. “I tried to avoid being an advocate, spokes model, and all this different things, but the more you try to avoid doing it, the more I found myself in the middle of it,” he said.

Mitte went on to support disability rights through public appearances, charitable work, and his anti-bullying campaign, Cut the Bull. “I’m lucky that I can be an advocate. I’m lucky that I can do what I do and talk to the people that I get to talk to,” he said.
Brownsville Organizations Remember Mitte’s Contributions

Mitte served as president of the Roy F. and Joann Cole Mitte Foundation and supported the Mitte Cultural District in Brownsville, according to ValleyCentral.
The district includes cultural institutions such as the Children’s Museum of Brownsville, Camille Playhouse, and the Brownsville Historical Association. It had recently received designation as a Texas Cultural District.

Following his death, the Mitte Cultural District issued a statement remembering his commitment to the arts and the community.
Reba Cardenas McNair, chair of the district’s board of directors, described Mitte as a generous supporter whose involvement went beyond philanthropy. “His friendship, generosity, and belief in Brownsville will never be forgotten,” she said.

Daniella Lopez Valdez, the district’s executive director, also emphasized Mitte’s belief that the arts could bring together people from different generations, cultures, and abilities.
“We will honor his memory by continuing the work he believed in, building bridges through the arts, creating opportunities for inclusion, and ensuring that Brownsville’s cultural community continues to thrive,” Valdez said.
On Facebook, the Children’s Museum of Brownsville remembered Mitte as a founding partner who helped continue his grandparents’ commitment to providing children with opportunities to learn and grow.
“His legacy will live on through every child who discovers, creates, and learns through play at our museum,” the statement read.
The City of Brownsville also expressed condolences, recognizing his work with the Mitte Foundation and his dedication to the community.
In its own statement, the Brownsville Historical Association remembered Mitte for giving his time to local programs and making people feel heard during community events.
The Disability Chamber of Commerce RGV recalled welcoming Mitte as a keynote speaker at the Lex Frieden Employment Awards three years earlier.
The organization highlighted the time he spent speaking with families during the conference and his efforts to challenge stereotypes about disability.
Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino Jr. also paid tribute, recalling Mitte’s decision to return to his family’s hometown and support local arts and disability initiatives. “His legacy will live on in Brownsville through the Mitte Cultural District and the many lives he touched along the way,” Trevino said.
As tributes continued, some fans turned their attention to a recent podcast post featuring Mitte.
