A boy’s marathon for his dad ends with a Spider-Man dream come true

Nine-year-old Oliver Smith, from Wombwell in Barnsley, England, has always loved Spider-Man more than anything. For a little boy with a big imagination, the superhero stood for courage, hope and the feeling that even the hardest battles could be faced one step at a time. This year, that idea became deeply personal for Oliver, when his family was shaken by frightening news about his father, Tom.

In August 2025, Tom was diagnosed with a meningioma, a type of brain tumor. By the time doctors found it, he had already lost most of the vision in one eye. For Oliver and his family, life suddenly changed shape around hospital visits, uncertainty and the long, anxious wait that comes with serious illness. Then, in December 2025, Tom underwent a 12-hour operation at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield to remove the tumor.

Watching his father go through such a difficult battle made Oliver want to help in any way he could. So he set himself a remarkable challenge: between January and April 26, 2026, he would run the distance of nine marathons, about 380 kilometers in total. It was an enormous feat for any child, let alone one so young, but Oliver kept going. Step by step, mile by mile, he ran with determination and with his family in his heart.

His effort was about more than personal achievement. Oliver wanted to raise money for The Brain Tumour Charity, an organization that had supported his family during some of their hardest days. By the time he finished, he had raised more than £16,000 — a sum that spoke not only to his endurance, but to the kindness and generosity his story inspired. Those around him were proud of what he had done, and of the quiet resilience he showed throughout it all.

Then came a surprise that felt straight out of one of Oliver’s favorite films. The BBC invited him to what he believed would be an interview about his fundraising on The One Show. Instead, he was taken to the Raffles hotel in London, where he found himself face to face with Tom Holland, Zendaya and Jacob Batalon, the stars of the Spider-Man movies.

As if that were not enough, they also gave Oliver tickets to the premiere of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. For a boy who had run so far for his dad, it was the kind of moment that seemed almost too magical to believe. Overwhelmed and smiling through tears, Oliver later said, “I burst into tears because I was just so happy.”

In the end, Oliver’s story is about more than a celebrity surprise or an impressive fundraising challenge. It is about a child’s love for his father, the strength a family can find in the darkest moments, and the way small acts of courage can grow into something extraordinary. For Oliver, the finish line brought not just pride, but a memory he will carry for the rest of his life.
