A Second Report Revealed the Family’s Direct Connection to the Emergency
According to the same publication, Brian’s brother, Zach Hickerson, entered the Greenville, South Carolina, Airbnb on Sunday afternoon and found Hayden unresponsive in a chair in the living room. Brian was reportedly asleep in another room.
Zach and Brian then called 911, placing Brian’s brother at the center of the initial emergency response. Hayden’s cause and manner of death have yet to be determined.
Months Earlier, Brian Spoke Candidly About Their Relationship
In a May 13, 2026, interview with TMZ’s Charlie Neff, Brian addressed his past with Hayden and reacted to her memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning.” He said the book’s account of their history was accurate and acknowledged that his abuse of Hayden was already part of the public record.
Brian also discussed the 2020 Valentine’s Day incident in Wyoming that led to his arrest on a domestic abuse charge. He said he had been drinking and became physical, adding that “you never lay hands on a woman.”
By the time of the interview, Brian described his relationship with Hayden as one based on “mutual respect” and said they were “good buddies.”
He also spoke about his sobriety and personal growth, crediting an Alcoholics Anonymous group called The Isolators with helping save his life. He said he was also working with a therapist and a sponsor.
But when the conversation turned to whether he and Hayden still had a future together, Brian gave a more complicated answer.
Asked if they would get back together, he said, “No.” When asked whether he would marry her, however, he replied, “Yeah, of course.”
Brian said he still thought marriage might be possible. “I hope so. I’m sorry. She probably don’t think the same way, but um you know, it’s uh you know,” he added.
When asked whether Hayden might be better off without him, Brian shifted the focus to her career. He called her “one of the most talented people” he had ever met and said he would be “an idiot” not to step aside and let her move forward professionally.
“So, we probably wouldn’t be good together,” he said, before adding that he wanted to see what Hayden would do with “the next… 30 years of her career.”
In the same interview, Brian was asked what he wanted people to understand about his relationship with Hayden. His answer was affectionate and surprisingly poetic.
“Hayden Panettiere is the sweetest thing in the world. It’s not about who you spend Saturday night with. It’s who you spend all day Sunday with. Hayden Panettiere was my Sunday girl,” he said.

Their Romance Had Already Taken a Dark Turn

It was not the first time Brian had attempted to have the convictions reduced or dismissed. He had reportedly made a similar request in July 2025.
His petition noted that he had fulfilled the conditions of his probation. The timing was striking: the ruling came only three days before Hayden died.
