I found 17 hotel receipts stuffed in my husband’s golf bag — my response brought his mistress in tears to my front door.
For eighteen years, Grant’s golf bag leaned by the garage door like one of those familiar things a wife stops noticing because she trusts the man carrying it. Saturday golf was his routine. Coffee at 6:10. White polo. Same leather glove. Same promise to be home before dinner.
Then a rainstorm flooded the garage. I was lifting boxes off the floor when Grant’s golf bag tipped over. I bent down to set it upright and saw the side pocket slightly open, paper swollen from the rain stuck in the zipper. I pulled it free before I could talk myself out of it.
Hotel receipts slid across the floor. All 17 of them. Same downtown hotel. Same room type. Always Saturday afternoons.
My hands stayed calm, which unsettled me more than any shaking would have. The second guest’s name was printed near the bottom: Tessa W. Three houses down. Golden retriever, white SUV, perfect tennis skirts.

Grant came home, sunburned and cheerful. “How was golf?” I asked. “Terrible,” he said, kissing my hair. “Lost two balls.”
I smiled, because if I’d shown rage, he would have noticed.
For three days, I moved through the house beside him with those receipts hidden in my recipe box, packing lunches and folding his shirts while I wondered whether one woman deserved the truth more than the other.
On Friday morning, after Grant left for work, I did something with those receipts that I still cannot undo. At 8:17 that night, pounding rattled my front door.
Tessa stood on my porch in the rain, sobbing, mascara running down her cheeks. Then she said six words I never expected to hear.
