My SIL kept dumping her three young kids on my mom because “she’s retired anyway and has nothing to do” — so I had to put a stop to it. My mom lives in the same neighborhood as my husband’s older sister, Rachel. One evening, I decided to stop by my mom’s house, and when I opened the door, my jaw nearly dropped. All three of Rachel’s young children were inside my mom’s house. My mom was standing in the middle of the kitchen, looking completely exhausted, not knowing whether to start cleaning up or cooking. I immediately asked: “Mom, what are Rachel’s kids doing here?” She sighed and replied: “Well, Rachel OFTEN drops them off in the morning and asks me to watch them for an hour, but then she’s gone ALL DAY. And this happens almost every day…” My mom is 68 years old and has back problems. Why should she have to take care of Rachel’s children? That same evening, I waited until Rachel came to pick them up and demanded an explanation. Rachel just rolled her eyes and said: “What’s the problem? WE’RE FAMILY!” I tried to stay calm and said: “You don’t even ask in advance what plans my mom has or whether she’s able to watch your kids. And you don’t even offer to pay her for watching them?” She burst out laughing right in my face and said: “I’M NOT GOING TO PAY HER! She’s retired and just SITS AT HOME DOING NOTHING anyway. Consider it a favor that I’m giving your mom something to do so she doesn’t get bored.” I stood there thinking that no matter what I said to Rachel, in her mind, she was ALWAYS right. The thing is, Rachel is an incredibly pushy person. She was constantly interfering in our marriage, telling me how to be a proper wife to her brother — how I should cook, clean, and everything else. I’d put up with it to keep the peace in the family, but this was the last straw. My mom is simply a very humble and kind person. But I wasn’t going to let anyone take advantage of her. A BRILLIANT IDEA was already forming in my head. I smiled at Rachel and said: “You’re right. Please come over to my house tomorrow for a family dinner. The whole family will be there.” And when Rachel walked into my house the next day, she SCREAMED so loudly it felt like the whole house was shaking. Oh yes, something SPECIAL was waiting for her.
