Sophie Trudeau Speaks Out About the Stress and Publicity Following Her Split from Ex Justin

Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, 51, stepped into the hot seat on “Arlene Is Alone” on an episode that aired on November 13, 2025, and finally addressed what millions have whispered about since her split from former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau: the emotional fallout, the relentless public glare, and his unveiled romance with global pop star Katy Perry.

The celebrated author and mental health advocate, long admired for her strength and grace, spoke with host Arlene Dickinson about navigating life after love, and the intense pressure of co-parenting in the spotlight.

When asked about the headlines swirling around her ex-husband’s new relationship, Sophie didn’t shy away. “We’re human beings and stuff affects us,” she said plainly — a powerful admission from someone who’s lived under the constant gaze of cameras and critics.

But rather than dwell on the drama, she showed remarkable composure. “How you react to stuff is your decision,” she added. “So I choose to try to listen to the music instead of the noise.”

More than just a personal reckoning, Sophie spoke about the weight of public life on their children and the entire family — both when Justin was still in office and now that their separation is highly publicized.

“And especially in the world that we live today, the scrutiny, the speed at which things are happening,” she said. “You’re constantly reacting knowing that when you go out there, the partner and the man that you love and your kids, you know, they’re […] under physical and psychological stress and […] safety issues. That’s hard to […] face as a family.”

It was a rare moment of vulnerability — and one that struck a chord with many watching.

Navigating Life After the Spotlight

Since announcing their separation in August 2023, Sophie and Justin have maintained a united front for the sake of their children. They still gather for holidays, and have even vacationed together — a sign of mutual respect and commitment to family, even as their paths diverge.

“I’m definitely not a single mom. I have a partnership with a father who has such deep love and availability to his children,” she said of Justin.

It was Justin who first announced their split on August 3, 2023, posting a statement on social media. Apart from his personal message, his office also released a formal statement confirming that the Trudeaus had signed a legal separation agreement.

“They remain a close family,” the statement read. “Both parents will be a constant presence in their children’s lives and Canadians can expect to often see the family together.”

The couple shares three children: 18-year-old Xavier, 17-year-old Ella-Grace, and 12-year-old Hadrien. While neither Sophie nor Justin ever confirmed the reason behind their split, political observers have long speculated.

Nelson Wiseman, a political science professor at the University of Toronto, once suggested that an ultimatum from Sophie — urging Justin not to run in the next election — may have contributed to the decision.

It wasn’t until January 2025 that Justin finally announced his resignation as leader of Canada’s Liberal Party. Following months of political instability and internal party strife, he acknowledged that the toll had become too heavy.

“As you all know, I am a fighter, and I am not someone who backs away from a fight, particularly when a fight is as important as this one is,” he said at the time. “But I have always been driven by my love for Canada, by my desire to serve Canadians, and by what is in the best of Canadians and Canadians deserve a real choice in the next election [sic].”

Justin’s story took a new turn on October 25, 2025, when he and Katy went public with their romance. The two were seen enjoying a romantic birthday dinner in Paris, France, celebrating Katy’s 41st birthday — their first public outing as a couple.

Now, more than a year on, the couple shows no signs of slowing down. Justin recently shared a sweet photo of himself and Katy as part of an Instagram carousel celebrating what he called a “special” summer — captioning it, “Grateful for the moments that made this summer so special, and for the people I got to share them with.”

The snapshot showed the pair beaming and relaxed, each holding a drink, a picture of quiet happiness far removed from the chaos of political life.

Katy Perry herself has made no secret of how she feels. At the premiere of her concert film _”Katy Perry: The Lifetimes Tour”_ at the Tribeca Festival, she told _People_, “I am very in love” — words that seem to say everything.
