On November 7, 2003, Dorothy Fletcher, a 67-year-old woman from Liverpool, England, was on a flight to Orlando, Florida, to attend her daughter’s wedding. She was looking forward to the special family celebration when, during the flight, she suddenly suffered a heart attack. The situation was frightening, and the cabin crew quickly asked if there was a doctor on board. What happened next seemed almost impossible. As soon as the announcement was made, 15 cardiologists stood up to help. By an amazing coincidence, they were all traveling to Orlando for the same medical conference. Dorothy later told BBC Breakfast, “I only realised when they said is there a doctor on board and all the lights above their heads began lighting up and they all came running towards me. I can’t believe there were so many doctors – never mind cardiologists – on a plane. It was so frightening. I had never experienced a heart attack. But to see so many people helping me took the fright away.” She also told AP, “I was in a very bad way and they all rushed to help.” The doctors cared for Dorothy until the plane made an emergency landing in North Carolina. She spent two days in intensive care at a hospital in Charlotte and several more days recovering. Thankfully, she became well enough to continue her trip and arrived in time for her daughter’s wedding. Dorothy never learned the names of the doctors who saved her life, but she remained deeply thankful. As of April 2025, she was still alive.
