Montana Man Identified After Eight Family Members Were Found Deceased at Sunday Dinner – Details on What Happened

One detail from those terrifying minutes would prove especially heartbreaking: someone inside the home managed to call for help.

What should have been an ordinary family gathering in Billings, Montana, became the scene of an almost unimaginable tragedy. But as investigators reconstructed what unfolded inside the home, two devastating details emerged about who was responsible and who desperately tried to summon help.

Eight relatives, including four children, were killed on Sunday, August 23, 2026, after gunfire erupted during a family dinner.

The horror unfolded within a remarkably short window of time, with authorities placing a series of crucial events between approximately 5:49 p.m. and 6:22 p.m. What initially sounded to some neighbors like an everyday summer noise would soon take on a much darker meaning.

A Family Gathering Turned Into a Nightmare

The victims included Dana and Barbara Smith, their 92-year-old mother, Evelyn Smith, as well as Megan Ghekiere and four children. Megan’s children, Chloe Ireland, 7, and Owen Ireland, 13, were killed alongside her stepchildren, Charlotte Ghekiere, 12, and Landon Ghekiere, 15.

Evelyn was reportedly wheelchair-bound. The children’s parents had remained amicable despite divorce, and family friend and neighbor Jennifer Mercer said the youngsters were all close and got along.

Megan’s former husband, Brad Ireland, lives in Arizona. Her current husband and the father of Charlotte and Landon, Adam Ghekiere, was away from the home when the violence unfolded. The family had gathered for what had become a regular dinner. However, there was one unusual detail about the timing that would later stand out.

Adam said the gathering would ordinarily have happened on a Friday. That difference may have affected who the person responsible expected to find inside.

The First Sign Something Was Wrong

According to a detailed timeline of the attack, authorities said the person responsible arrived at the residence at approximately 5:49 p.m. Around 11 minutes later, neighbors believed they heard what sounded like fireworks.

In the summertime, Yellowstone County Sheriff Kent O’Donnell explained that kind of noise would not necessarily have immediately alarmed anyone. But by 6:02 p.m., dispatchers had received a call from a female voice inside the house.

Yellowstone County sheriff’s deputies arrived approximately eight minutes later, at 6:10 p.m. Authorities were now racing toward a home where an extraordinary act of violence was still unfolding. Meanwhile, Adam was not simply unaware of what was happening; his job meant he began hearing pieces of the emergency response himself.

A Father Heard the Emergency Unfold While at Work

Adam was working as a rescue firefighter at an airshow when he heard reports of the shooting through a communication system. Then he realized the address being discussed was his in-laws’ home.

By the time we got to the house, they wouldn’t let us get any closer because it was still under an active shooter status,

he later recalled. I feared the worst right then, Adam said. His fears would ultimately be confirmed in the most devastating possible way.

Megan, Charlotte, and Landon had all been killed. So had Chloe and Owen, Megan’s two children with Brad, along with three older members of the family. But there was still the question of who had made that critical 911 call from inside. The answer would leave the grieving family describing one of the youngest victims as a hero.

The Person Who Called 911 Was Inside the Home

Police eventually confirmed that 12-year-old Charlotte Ghekiere was the person who called 911. Jennifer later put the family’s feelings into words.

Charlotte was the hero that dialed 911,

she said.

She tried to save her family. She lived by her favorite quote, ‘I love you more.’

Jennifer similarly said the family wanted the public to know about the child’s actions.

The one thing we do know is that Charlotte was the hero,

she said.

And that’s something the family does want out there.

For Adam, those words carry another deeply personal meaning.

I keep hearing her quote to me every time I would say ‘I love you’ and she would say ‘I love you more,’

he recalled.

Yet as heartbreaking as Charlotte’s attempt to get help was, investigators were also piecing together another question: Who could have entered a family dinner and committed such an act? The answer was someone those inside knew extremely well.

Authorities Identified the Gunman

The person responsible was 44-year-old Alan Michael Smith, the adult son of Dana and Barbara and Megan’s brother, according to reports identifying the gunman and examining the circumstances before the killings. Authorities said Alan showed up at the home unannounced at around 6 p.m. while his relatives were gathered.

He then opened fire, killing his parents, grandmother, sister, nieces and nephews. Officials and relatives said Alan subsequently set the home on fire. As emergency responders closed in, Alan turned the gun on himself before police could take him into custody.

Kent described what Alan carried out as a very complex attack. The perpetrator was found dead while authorities were searching for the person responsible.

The revelation that the suspected gunman was not a stranger but a member of the very family that had been gathering together only deepened the shock, and relatives say there had been troubling signs before that Sunday.

His Parents Had Reportedly Asked Him to Leave

Alan had previously lived in the Billings home with his parents for several years. According to his former brother-in-law, however, Dana and Barbara had asked their adult son to move out only a couple of weeks before the killings.

Brad described Alan as a hermit who spent much of his life isolated in his room and on a computer.

Brad said.

Alan had attended Eastern Washington University, but Brad said he had struggled to maintain employment. He had followed his parents from Seattle to Montana after Megan became the first member of the family to relocate to the state.

Brad also claimed that concerns about Alan had been expressed before the killings.

There were many red flags and many people spoke out,

he said.

No one listened.

The fact that Alan had recently been told to leave his parents’ home has emerged as one possible piece of context surrounding what happened. Authorities’ description of the attack, however, does not establish that request as a definitive motive. There was another cruel twist involving the timing of the family dinner.

Two of the Children May Not Have Been Expected to Be There

Adam believes Alan may not have anticipated that Charlotte and Landon would be inside the home that Sunday. As he explained, the extended family usually gathered for dinner on Fridays.

I don’t think he expected my kids to be there,

Adam said of his brother-in-law.

His assessment of what happened was devastatingly simple.

Monster isn’t even enough to describe what he did,

he said. The attack leaves Adam grieving his wife, his two children, and other members of his extended family at once.

Brad, meanwhile, lost his former wife Megan and their two children, Chloe and Owen. In the days since, people far beyond the immediate family have attempted to rally around those left behind.

More than $114,000 Raised for Grieving Father

A GoFundMe created on Adam’s behalf describes him as an Airport Rescue Firefighter who has spent his career helping other people through their worst moments.

Organizers said the money will help cover funeral and memorial expenses, counseling, time away from work, and other unexpected costs following the deaths.

No amount of money can lessen this loss. Not even close,

Instead, organizers said their hope is to give Adam enough financial security and time to grieve without immediately facing worries about returning to work or paying bills. The fundraiser also points supporters toward a separate campaign intended to help the mother of two of the victims.

The response has been considerable. An August 25 update said more than $50,000 had already been raised in a short period, accompanied by an incredible outpouring of support from the Billings community and fire departments around Montana.

Montana Killings Come amid Troubling 2026 Trend

The Billings tragedy has also become part of a disturbing national pattern. According to NBC New York’s report on the case, the deaths marked the 22nd mass killing recorded in the United States in 2026 under a database maintained by The Associated Press and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University.

Fifteen of those incidents reportedly stemmed from domestic disputes. James Alan Fox, a Northeastern University criminologist who manages the database, said that proportion is higher than the historical average of roughly half of U.S. mass killings.

The Montana shooting was also described as the deadliest such incident in the country since April, when a Louisiana father fatally shot eight children, including seven of his own, and wounded two women.

For the relatives left behind in Billings, however, statistics cannot capture what disappeared from one home during those horrifying minutes.

A weekly family dinner ended with eight loved ones dead, and the man authorities say was responsible was their own son, brother, and uncle, who had reportedly been asked to move out just weeks earlier.

Additionally, amid the terror inside the house, it was 12-year-old Charlotte who picked up the phone. She called 911 and tried to bring help to her family, leaving those who loved her with the words she so often used with her father: I love you more.
